Meinertstrasse 18
The building at Meinertstrasse 18 in Oelsnitz / Erzgeb. is popularly known as the Schocken department store after its former use and is a listed building .
history
In 1904, the Ury and Schocken families acquired the building with today's address, Meinertstrasse 18, in which the brothers Salman and Simon Schocken opened their first Schocken department store on October 21, 1904 . In 1929 the house was extensively expanded to an enormous 1,200 m² sales area for the time. The extension was built by the architect Bernhard Sturtzkopf , a former assistant to Walter Gropius , in the New Building style.
After the end of the Second World War , the building became public property and instead of the Schocken department store, the consumer chain now operated the department store. After the political changes in 1989/1990 , the building was transferred back to the Schocken family. Until 1993, the building was still a consumer cooperative used as a department store, after its bankruptcy , the building fell into disrepair. In 1997 it was finally placed under monument protection. A comprehensive restoration of the two buildings took place between 1999 and 2000 , during which a connecting structure was demolished.
