biography

Meinhard II comes from the Meinhardin family . His parents were Count Engelbert II. Von Görz and Adelheid von (Dachau) -Valley, daughter of Count Otto I. von Dachau-Valley. The Counts of Valley were a sideline of the Counts of Scheyern- Wittelsbach . According to documents from January 18, 1206 and 1211 Meinhard II was married to the daughter Adelheid of Count Heinrich I of Tyrol , so he was the brother-in-law of Count Albert III. of Tyrol. The couple's children are not known from sources. Documentary evidence for another marriage of Meinhard II is not available. Meinhard II became known nationwide when he tried to capture the English King Richard the Lionheart, who was stranded after a crusade near Aquileia. He fled to Austria and was arrested there by Duke Leopold V. In the throne dispute between King Philip of Swabia and the Guelph Otto IV of Braunschweig, the Gorizia and their relative, Count Albert III. of Tyrol on the side of the Staufer, who was murdered in 1208. The documents indicate frequent disputes between the Church of Aquileia and Vogt Meinhard due to alienation of church property and different views on the bailiff's rights. At the turn of the year 1215/1216 these disputes escalated to such an extent that Count Meinhard II was temporarily banned from church. After the death of his brother, Count Engelbert III. von Gorizia (1220) he continues the rule alone. In the documents he often appears with Engelhard III's son, his nephew Meinhard III. von Gorizia (the later Count Meinhard I of Tyrol and Gorizia (III.). Count Meinhard II of Gorizia appears for the last time in a document on July 14, 1231 as Vogt of Aquileia. He died in 1232, according to the death book of the Rosazzo monastery, probably on September 9th March. His successor in the rule was Count Meinhard III of Gorizia .
