Count Engelbert III. von Gorizia (* around 1164 - 1172; † September 5, 1220 ) was a count from the Meinhardin family . Between 1189 and 1220 he ruled the county of Gorizia .

biography

Engelbert's parents were Count Engelbert II of Görz and Adelheid of (Dachau) Valley, daughter of Count Otto I of Dachau Valley . The Counts of Valley were a sideline of the Counts of Scheyern-Wittelsbach . Engelbert III. von Gorizia and his brother Meinhard II are mentioned for the first time in a donation for the Neustift monastery (near Brixen) in 1177 (before May) as children without names. On September 5, 1186 he appears for the first time independently in a document from his father. Engelbert III. was married to Mathilde von Andechs , who is entered in the Nekrolog of the Andechs monastery in Dießen on January 17th as Countess of Gorizia. The connection is also documented by a deed of donation (1239/1240) of her half-brother Bishop Poppo von Bamberg (Count of Andechs), who calls Engelbert's son Meinhard (III.) His nephew. Mathilde was a daughter of Margrave Berthold III. of Istria (Count of Andechs).

The couple had two children, Count Meinhard III. von Gorizia and a daughter who is only mentioned without a name in a deed of donation from Bishop Walther von Gurk in 1206. There is no definite proof of the year Mathilde von Andechs died. A possible second marriage of Engelbert III is also not clearly verifiable. with the daughter Mathilde of Count Meinhard von Schwarzenburg (Istria), who was often inferred in literature because of the transfer of the bailiwick from Porec / Istria to the Gorizia. Count Engelbert III. was Vogt of the Millstatt Monastery and the Church of Aquileia. With the acquisition of the bailiwick of the church of Parenzo / Porec (from 1191/1194) and the administrative seat at the Pisino / Pazin / Mitterburg castle, he expanded the Gorizia to Istria. He often had arguments with the Patriarch of Aquileia because of arbitrariness and overstepping his competencies as bailiff. Engelbert III. is last mentioned alive in a chronicle around August 1220, according to a source on matters relating to the city of Treviso, he had died in July 1221.
