As a master of of princes one is Flemish painter called that or maybe a bit earlier in 1490 in Brussels worked or environment. The old Dutch artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name based on the portrait of Engelbert II , Count of Nassau, which he created. Various other portraits of high-ranking people were attributed to the master, although some attribution is controversial in art history.

Attempts were made to equate the master of the portraits of princes with the master of the Magdalene legend , but this was not successful. Also suggestions to equate the master with other artists whose names are known such. B. one of the brothers Jacob or Lieven van Laethem, traceable between 1493 and 1522, are controversial.
