Master of the Legend of Saint Godelieve

As Master of the Legend of the Holy Godelieve or master of Godelieve legend ( NDL. ) Meester van de Godelieve legend is a medieval painter of panel paintings from the Flanders called the last quarter of the 15th century. The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name from his pictures for a multi-part winged altar that depicts the life and miracles of the saint Godelieve, who is venerated in Flanders . The work from around 1470 or 1480 was probably commissioned by a craftsmen's guild in Brugesfor the Liebfrauenkirche there , where it was placed in a chapel until the end of the 18th century. Today the completely preserved altar is kept in New York in the Metropolitan Museum of Art .

style

Although the style of the master of the legend of Saint Godelieve is close to that of other contemporary painters such as the master of the (Bruges) Ursula legend , there is a difference in craftsmanship and the individual style of the master is somewhat flatter and less developed ”.
