Mutt (English for "mutt") is a sleek, text -based email client for Unix and other Unix-like operating systems . It is subject to the GNU General Public License (GPL). Mutt works in text mode and can therefore be used in text windows, on computer consoles and with ssh or telnet in many environments. Media and formats other than text are supported by the fact that independent programs can easily be called up for special processing.
The use is exclusively keyboard-controlled, therefore it takes getting used to for a user used to graphical interfaces , but very well documented. Mutt can be flexibly configured. Thanks to functions such as sorting by original / reply e-mail ( threading ) or rule-based value labeling (scoring), it is particularly suitable for large volumes of e-mails. Cryptographic software such as GnuPG and OpenSSL (for S / MIME ) for encrypting and signing e-mails can be integrated by Mutt. Corresponding configuration options, outputs and keyboard shortcuts are integrated. Optionally, Mutt can be compiled with support for the multilingual Unicode character set in UTF-8 format and is still a modern program for e-mail communication.
In 2004, Mutt and KMail received the Linux New Media Award from Linux New Media AG in the “Best Mail Client” category. Michael Elkins created the software in 1995.
The motto of Mutt is "All mail clients suck. This one just sucks less. " (German:" All mail programs are annoying. This one is just a little less annoying. ")
