Kontact is a personal information manager and e-mail and groupware - client . The cross-platform application is developed by KDE .
A Kontact user can either start an integrated graphical user interface that contains all functions for e-mail, address book, appointments, notes, tasks, etc.; or individual applications. They all use the same settings and data. Kontact is a reference client of the Kolab groupware and also offers secure end-to-end encryption and offline operation.
Kontact provides for a modular connection of the programs, so that further modules can be developed and added in the future without changing Kontact. This offers the possibility of integrating privately developed modules and thus adapting the groupware to your own needs.
In August 2015, Kontact was completely ported to KDE Frameworks 5 and initially published as a "technology preview" as part of KDE Applications 15.08. With the release of KDE Applications 16.04 in April 2016 and after the removal of a large number of software errors, Kontact 5 was then released for productive use (including in Kubuntu 16.04).
Since 2016, the comprehensive cross-platform groupware Kube has been newly developed as part of the KDE project under the leadership of Kolab Systems AG , which uses parts of Kontact and can be seen as a kind of "sister project".
Components
Kontact was born out of the consideration that there was no groupware client in the KDE environment until then. However, since many individual programs were already available which together provide all the functions required for a groupware client, it was decided to bundle these in one program. Right from the start, however, it was important to ensure that there was still the possibility of starting all programs individually. This is how Kontact came about, and was first included in KDE 3.2. For example, unread e-mails or current appointments are displayed in the component-independent start view .
Kontact's functions depend above all on the functions of the programs that can be integrated there:
- KMail as a mail client
- KAddressbook as address management
- KOrganizer as an appointment and todo list manager
- KNotes for notepad management
- Akregator as a news collector
- KitchenSync to synchronize contacts and the like a. (uses OpenSync )
- KNode as a newsreader ( Usenet )
- KNewsTicker as a news ticker
- KWeather to display the weather
Kontact makes work easier, as it is not necessary to start several programs individually to read e-mails , manage addresses and plan appointments .
KAddressbook
KAddressbook is the address management of the graphical user interface KDE .
In addition to names, addresses and telephone numbers, KAdressbook can also store pictures, birthdays and anniversaries, information about instant messaging addresses or special cryptography information for exchanging encrypted mails. It is also possible to import and export the information in many different file formats.
A team of developers has also written a version that runs on other systems (such as Windows).
KMail
KMail has a number of functions that cannot be found in other programs of the same kind. KMail can save e-mails in both mbox and Maildir formats and thus adapt them to special needs. KMail can also set up various virus scanners and spam filters with the help of a graphical assistant designed for ease of use, which automatically recognizes the relevant available scanners and filters. KMail leaves the identification of unwanted or contaminated emails entirely to the integrated programs. In this way, it is also possible to equip KMail with phishing protection if this is supported by a virus scanner, as is the case e.g. B. is the case with ClamAV .
Another difference is the security features. KMail can expand the capabilities for cryptographic encryption through modules. In addition to the standard modules for S / MIME and OpenPGP support, any other modules can be loaded to expand the capabilities of KMail. The display of HTML -formatted e-mails or the reloading of data from the Internet by e-mails can only be permitted under certain conditions.
Further features are:
- Support of POP3 , SMTP , local mail transfer agents and (disconnected) IMAP as well as local mailboxes
- Import of emails from Outlook Express , Pegasus Mail , Netscape Mail etc.
- Import of address books from Outlook , Pegasus Mail, Eudora and Netscape LDIF ( LDAP format)
- diverse filter options
- Display of the signature status through colors (e.g. red - invalid or unknown signature )
- Integration of the KDE address book
- Support of mailing lists (e.g. display of mails in threads )
- intelligent quotation (highlight text, click on answer, only marked text is included in the answer)
- Search emails according to various criteria, results are displayed in virtual folders
- Display of the mime structure of an email
- Support of multiple identities (sender and recipient)
In 2004 KMail and mutt received the Linux New Media Award from Linux New Media AG in the “Best Mail Client” category.
With the release of version 4.6 of the KDE Software Compilation 4 in June 2011, the newly named "KMail 2" was introduced. The number "2" is used to illustrate a major change in technology because KMail 2 was newly based on the Akonadi data management service.
KNode
KNode is a newsreader that was developed for the KDE desktop environment . It was developed with the aim of giving inexperienced users access to Usenet . The focus is therefore on simple and intuitive usability and solid functionality.
KNotes
KNotes is a program for the KDE desktop to replace the yellow sticky notes that are often arranged around the screen. To do this, it creates virtual colored sticky notes directly on the desktop, which can be equipped with any information.
The notes are automatically saved when the program is closed and reloaded and displayed when the program is restarted. You use freely adjustable colors and fonts. Both the standard settings and the settings for individual notes can be changed.
If the appropriate settings have been made, the notes can also be printed out or sent by e-mail .
Akregator
Akregator is a feed reader , the Web feeds in the formats RSS and Atom View and manage. The display takes place either via a simplified text display or an embedded KHTML component. It is also easy to call up an external web browser to display an article.
The user can set different archiving periods for individual feeds and mark individual entries as important. The entries marked in this way are not automatically deleted even after the specified archiving period has expired.
KOrganizer
KOrganizer is the calendar and appointment management in Kontact. Several calendar resources can be created and displayed individually or together. The resources do not all have to be stored locally, but can also be integrated from external computers. It is also possible to display birthdays from the KAddressbook .
Kontact for Windows
The Personal Information Manager Kontact is also provided by Kolab Systems AG for the Windows operating system in version Kolab Kontact Enterprise 14 (status: February 2017) (the version of KDE Kontact included is 4.13).
history
The first release of KMail (version 0.5.7) was made by Stefan Taferner at the beginning of 1998. KMail was modified by Don Sanders in order to be integrated into the KDE PIM suite as a component under the common interface of Kontact was released as part of KDE 3.2.
