Eudora is an email program for Microsoft Windows , Mac OS and Linux that is named after the American author Eudora Welty .

The program was developed in 1988 by Steve Dorner while studying at the University of Illinois . In 1991 Qualcomm , a communications technology research and development company, took over the development and sale of the software.

Originally there were two versions of Eudora, a free and a pro version. In the end there were three different variants: adware , payware and the classic light mode with limited functionality. Technical support for Eudora has now been discontinued.

features

  • supports POP3 , IMAP and SMTP
  • multiple address books with filter option
  • Search function (accelerated from version 7)
  • Management of multiple e-mail accounts
  • automatic letter counting function
  • Formatting tool (helps to make text more legible and clearer)
  • supports the import of entire mailboxes and address books from other e-mail clients such as Outlook Express or Mozilla Thunderbird
  • Emoticons
  • SpamWatch
  • OpenSSL

advantages

One advantage is that Eudora doesn't necessarily need to be installed. It is therefore suitable for use on external hard drives or USB sticks.

weaknesses

Eudora ignores the specified character encoding of incoming messages (see MIME types ) and therefore often displays them incorrectly or illegibly.

Further development

With the release of version 7.1 in autumn 2006 Qualcomm announced that it would no longer pursue Eudora as a commercial product. It has since been further developed under the project name Penelope as an open source program that is technically based on Mozilla Thunderbird , but is to be based on Eudora in use. The last version of Eudora OSE (Open Source Edition) 1.0 released on September 13, 2010 was based on Thunderbird 3.0.4.

On May 22, 2018, Qualcomm and the Computer History Museum announced that ownership of the software and domain had been transferred so that the source code of the most recently commercial versions for Windows (7.1) and Macintosh (6.2.4) could be licensed under the free BSD license private and commercial use can be downloaded. The HERMES project was created on the basis of the published source code, the aim of which is to replace obsolete and non-license-free components with new code and to add new functions to attract power users .
