Master of the Holy Tribe the Elder

Master of the Holy Tribe d. Ä .: Kinship altar , approx. 1420

The Elderly Master of the Holy Kinship ( Master of the Holy Kinship the Elder ) was a medieval painter who worked in Cologne or the surrounding area from around 1410 to 1440. Since his real name is unknown, he was given an emergency name after his main work, a three-part altarpiece. The central part of this triptych shows the holy clan , i.e. mother and child Jesus surrounded by their ancestors.

The master is called the elder to distinguish him from a painter who also worked in Cologne in the Middle Ages shortly after him, the so-called Younger Master of the Holy Tribe (* around 1450, † around 1515, active in Cologne around 1475–1515 / 1518) whose main work also depicts the motif of the Holy Family.

The Master's Holy Tribe

The family tree of Jesus as the root of Jesse was a popular medieval motif. The image of the Elder Master of the Holy Clan derived from this is one of the earliest depictions of a Holy Family of its kind. It removes the restriction of people to central, almost static figures , which was otherwise common, especially in early medieval iconography , and brings together a large number of people in a small space in an animated dialogue - in a lively “family get-together” in the garden ”.

Painting style and workshop

The painting style of the elder master of the holy clan is called the soft style , as it was used from 1400 by Cologne painters such as the master of Veronica . The style is revealed, among other things, in the representation of a mother-child relationship and shows the special veneration of the Mother of God and Madonna of his time.

It is believed that the elder master of the Holy Kinship ran a larger workshop in Cologne, whose employees were influenced by his style and that of other Upper Rhine masters. The master of the Darmstadt Passion is considered an employee .
