A painter who worked in Bohemia at the beginning of the 15th century is known as the master of the Madonna of St. Vitus . The medieval artist, who is not known by name, gets his emergency name after the Madonna from the Cathedral of St. Vitus in Prague, which he painted between 1390 and 1400 . Surrounded by the saints patrons of this church such as Saints Vitus and Wenceslas, Mary and the Child is the only work that has survived from the master. The picture is painted on wood. Today the work is owned by the Prague National Gallery . It is considered an outstanding example of the International Gothic period in Prague and a major work of Bohemian painting . Prague around 1400 was an art center of European importance.
