Master of the Piccolomini Madonna: Madonna and Child, Italy, ca.1450 (Paris, Louvre)

The Italian sculptor who created a typical marble relief of a Madonna around 1450 is known as the master of the Piccolomini Madonna ( it .: maestro della mandonna piccolomini ). This Madonna was probably originally created for the Palazzo dei Piccolomini in Siena . The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name after this work, which can be found today in Siena in the palace in the Chigi Saracini collection.

Group of sculptors

In addition to the Madonna and Child from the Piccolomini Palace, there are a number of other reliefs that show a very similar figure of Mary , which, like its model, usually stands three-quarters of a turn behind a parapet on which the Child Jesus lies with a gesture of blessing. These reliefs are also attributed to the master and his circle. In addition to the master of the Piccolomini Madonna, names such as Domenico Rosselli or Mino da Fiesole are sometimes assumed to belong to this group of sculptors . Some of the Madonnas are also said to be close to a lost bronze model by Donatello . Ornamental motifs such as candles or inkwell can be found on some works.

Works

In addition to the Piccolomini Madonna in Siena, works grouped around the master of the Piccolomini Madonna are found in museums in Paris ( Louvre ), Pesaro (City Museum), Florence (Museo Bardini), London, ( Victoria and Albert Museum ) and New York ( Metropolitan Museum ) shown. Further works are in private hands.
