Master of the Martyrdoms of Sebastian

The 80 centimeter wide relief of the Martyrdoms of Sebastian can be found today in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna . It depicts what is happening very realistically. In the background, numerous secondary motifs are worked on in small detail, which further demonstrate the artist's high level of skill. The master of the martyrdom of Sebastian created a work that influenced many of his successors.
Together with the works of Adam Lenckhardt , the chamber sculptor of Prince Karl Eusebius von Liechtenstein , the work of the master of the Martyrs of Sebastian is an example from the heyday of ivory sculpture in Vienna. During the reigns of the Prince of Liechtenstein and Emperor Leopold I, the city had developed into a center of baroque ivory carving since 1640. This can also be seen in the numerous sculptures by the Fury Master from the 17th century.
Other works made of ivory can be ascribed to the master of the Martyrs of Sebastian , such as the lidded goblet with the story of Albuin and Rosamunde or the Hercules tote bag made of ivory and gold-plated silver. These can also be found in Vienna. A pair of figures representing Hercules and Achelous is also attributed to the master and is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
