Master of the Tiburtine Sibyl
A Dutch Gothic painter is named as the master of the Tiburtine Sibyl . He was probably active in Haarlem and Löwen between 1470 and 1490. Very little is known about his life, so he is named with an emergency name after his picture “Prophecy of the Sibyl of Tibur”.
In this picture, the painter deals with the motif of the Sibyl , known in the Middle Ages , who interprets an apparition of Mary to a Roman emperor. Representations of this legend of the 14th century, which is very well known in Italy, became - as the picture of the master shows - popular beyond the Alps from the 15th century. The detailed representation of contemporary fashion in the picture often attracts attention.
The painting probably came from the workshop of the Dutch painter Dierick Bouts , where the master of the Tiburtine Sibyl completed it. Attempts were made to ascribe the work to Dierick Bout himself, but this thesis was not recognized.
