Dierick Bouts the Younger , also Dieric Bouts , Dirck Bouts and Thierry Bouts , (* around 1448 probably in Leuven ; † May 2, 1491 in Leuven) was a Dutch painter .

Life

Dierick Bouts d. J. was the eldest son of the painter Dierick Bouts the Elder. Ä , from whom he was certainly also trained. His activity as a painter is documented several times in old documents. From 1475 onwards, together with his younger brother Aelbert Bouts , who also worked as a painter, he is said to have completed several pictures left unfinished by his father. In the early 80s of the 15th century he received payments for model drawings for the Sint Pieter Church in Leuven. In 1486, the two brothers were commissioned to paint the outside of the wings of their father's “Last Supper Triptych” in Sint Pieter.

In spite of this reliable information, it has not been possible for art science to date Dierick Bouts the Elder. J. to assign a work with certainty, which suggests that he adapted to his father's style to such an extent that it is hardly possible to distinguish between them. Nevertheless, several attempts were made to compile lists of his works. A catalog of works prepared by Wauters included z. B. Works which the vast majority of researchers consider to be the work of their father or Rogier van der Weydens . Puyvelde tried to equate him with the master of the Tiburtine Sibyl , but found no confirmation of his thesis. It was a similar experience for Schöne, who wanted to see a work by his hand in the Munich winged altarpiece “The Pearl of Brabant” . This thesis was based on the fact that the winged altar, due to its miniature, far too pleasing character, was not considered by some researchers to be the work of Dierick Bout the Elder. Ä. is considered, which is why they ascribed it to an anonymous artist, whom they gave the emergency name Master of the Pearl of Brabant . Schöne now tried to name this master as Dierick Bouts d. J. was largely rejected because the majority of researchers continue to regard the Munich winged altar as a work of their father due to its high quality.
