Aelbert Bouts , also Aelbrecht Bouts , (* between 1451 and 1454 probably in Leuven , † 1549 in Leuven) was a Dutch painter.

Aelbert Bouts was the younger son of the painter Dierick Bouts the Elder. Ä. and brother of Dierick Bouts the Elder, who also worked as a painter . J. He probably received his first training from his father, but today it is widely assumed that he was also instructed by another painter outside of Leuven. After completing his training, he returned to Leuven in 1476 at the latest, where he married Maria Coocx in 1481 and Elisabeth Nausnyders in 1491. In 1524 he is documented as one of the head of the cloth makers' guild.

He was likely to have spent most of his creative time in Leuven, where he worked for numerous churches. One of these works was the "Mariae-Himmelfahrt-Triptychon" (Assumption of Mary Triptychon) in Brussels today, which is the only known personal work and was the basis for all further attributions. Before the discovery of the sources that identify Aelbert Bouts as the creator of this work, it was assigned to an anonymous painter with the emergency name Meister der Himmelfahrt Mariae .

Aelbert Bout's paintings are stylistically close to those of his father, but appear somewhat antiquated compared to his work. At the same time, his works also show the influence of Hugo van der Goes , which led some researchers to suspect that he could be seen as a possible second teacher for Aelbert. He repeated his father's compositions many times without achieving its quality. His favorite subjects were diptychs depicting “Christ as Man of Sorrows” and Mary as “Mater Dolorosa”. Together with his brother he completed several unfinished works left behind by his father after 1475. Later he received several orders to restore some of his pictures.
