Master of Naughty Children

As a master of naughty children one is Florentine artists of the Renaissance called that a number of the early 16th century terracotta figures has created. The master, who is not known by name, got his emergency name from a motif that he repeatedly used for these figures: he lets individual or playfully naughty child figures perform "little pranks" in the vicinity of the main character.

Workshop manufacturing

It can be assumed that the master of naughty children ran a workshop that produced figures with a religious but also secular background in large numbers. Terracotta figures of the Renaissance have also been preserved from other studios in Florence and, in addition to using different motifs, can be used for example. B. can be distinguished from each other by firing technology or investigations into the consistency of the glaze . It can also be seen that such figures are not templates for larger sculptures, but collectors' items for a separate market at the time.

style

Even if the work of the master of naughty children does not come close to the significance of other works of art of the budding Renaissance, it is not mass-produced. It shows the hand of an experienced and trained artist in its skilful representation of movement, folds and overall composition. In the master's figures, sculptures by important artists of the Italian Renaissance can be heard. The Charitas figures show an influence of Donatello and in general the influence of Verruchio or Benedetto da Maiano can be seen in the work.
