Master of the Aachen Christophorus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Master of the Aachen Christopher one is Westphalian sculptor and carver referred to the 1520 in the area around Osnabrück worked. The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name after the wooden figure of St. Christopher created by him , today in the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aachen . It is a 52 centimeter high figure made of oak wood and painted.

The master of the Aachener Christophorus was possibly an employee or assistant of the master of Osnabrück , to whom the wooden figure was first ascribed. Due to small differences in the execution of the figure compared to the other works of the master of Osnabrück , however, it was removed from his catalog of works and the master of the Aachener Christophorus was defined as an independent artist. By looking at the work of this master it should be possible to interpret and structure the development of late medieval sculpture in the Osnabrück area more precisely.
