The sculptor who created the grave monument of Adalbert III around 1484 is known as the Adalbert master or master of the Adalbert tomb in Mainz Cathedral . created by Saxony for the Mainz Cathedral . The grave monument of Bernhard von Breidenbach from 1497 there is also said to come from his hand.

Furthermore, the burial group from around 1495, which can also be found in Mainz in the cathedral , is attributed to the Adalbert master and his workshop, which depicts the lamentation of Christ in life-size figures. The Madonna of the Palestinians, donated by Bernhard von Breidenbach and Philipp von Bicken, which was placed in the cloister of the cathedral after the Liebfrauenkirche was destroyed in 1793, is also regarded as his work.

The work of the Adalbert master was created during the transition from the late Gothic to the Renaissance. Together with the work of Hans Backoffen , who followed a little later , it is considered to be a highlight of Middle Rhine sculpture in Mainz.

The name of the Adalbert master is not known for sure, so his sculptures are carried under his emergency name . His name is assumed to be Valentin (us).
