Master of Belmer Andreas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a master of Belmer Andreas one is Westphalian sculptor and carver called that in 1510 in the area around Osnabrück worked.

The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name after the wooden figure of St. Andrew he created , which is located in the Catholic Church of St. Dionysius im Belm in the district of Osnabrück. Another oak sculpture of Saint Wiho to be found there is also attributed to the master.

The master of Belmer Andreas was possibly an employee or assistant to the master of Osnabrück . By looking at the work of the two masters, the development of late medieval sculpture in the Osnabrück area can be interpreted more precisely. The Andreas figure shows similarities with figures from the Snetlage epitaph, dated 1517, in Osnabrück Cathedral or the Krakow altar by Veit Stoss .

The attribution of a figure of Mary to the master of Belmer Andreas , which is now in the Landesmuseum Hannover and which is said to have formed an altar with the two figures of saints, is largely not recognized.
