Master of the Dominican cycle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a master of the Dominican cycle , master of the Dominican cycle or master of Nuremberg Dominican cycle is late Middle painter referred to the 1511/12 a succession of panels with representations of the Passion painted. The six pictures were donated for the church of the Nuremberg Dominican Monastery by citizens of the city, whose coats of arms can still be seen on some of the pictures. The work of the master, who is not known by name, is an example of the art of painting in Nuremberg at the time of Albrecht Dürer , who was envoy of the Greater Council in Nuremberg from 1509 and held a leading position among the Nuremberg painters. Studying the work of the master of the Dominican cycle in connection with Dürer's work can offer art historians the opportunity to understand the extent of Dürer's influence on other painters in Nuremberg.

The Dominican cycle consists of the following pictures, today in the holdings of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum :

  • Christ before Caiaphas (inventory number Gm 542)
  • Christ in Limbo (inventory number Gm 543)
  • Resurrection of Christ (inventory number Gm 1111)
  • Noli me tangere (inventory number Gm 544)
  • Ascension of Christ (inventory number Gm545)
  • Pentecost picture (inventory number Gm 546)

A picture depicting the Assumption of Mary from the possession of the Peller family from Nuremberg was described in the 19th century as a work by Michael Wolgemut , the most important representative of an older Franconian school. However, this assignment is disputed and the work is ascribed to the master of the Dominican cycle. The picture is now privately owned in the United States of America.

Another picture attributed to the master of the Dominican cycle, depicting Christ on the Mount of Olives, is in the holdings of the Bavarian State Painting Collections .
