Master of the Mortar Epitaph

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a master of the Mörlinepitaphs , Master of Augsburger Mörlindenkmals or master of Mörlin monument is late Gothic sculptor Denoted at 1497 grave monument of Abbot Konrad Mörlin († 1510) in Augsburg has created.

The artist, who is not known by name, created the sandstone work for the chapter house of the St. Ulrich and Afra monastery . It is 172 centimeters high and 172 centimeters wide and shows the abbot surrounded by saints in front of the Blessed Mother . It was probably commissioned by Konrad while he was still alive after his election to office. In the 19th century it was transferred to the municipal art collections of Augsburg.

Several other stylistically related grave monuments are ascribed to the master, such as B. the tomb in the cloister of Augsburg cathedral, created in 1503 for the doctor and humanist Adolph Occo . The works are considered outstanding examples of portraits on late Gothic grave monuments.

It is suggested to identify the master with Gregor Erhart ; he was demonstrably known to Abbot Konrad and made some works for him.
