Master of the Nürtinger Altar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In art history, the late medieval painter is sometimes referred to as the master of the Nürtingen altar , who painted a winged altar in the town church of Sankt Laurentius in Nürtingen around 1516 .

This three-part altar of Mary shows, opened in the center, the Holy Family gathered around Mary and Jesus . The birth of Jesus and the coronation of Mary are depicted in the wings. The pictures on the outside show scenes from the life of Mary as the mother of Jesus , including the Annunciation. In the Nürtinger Altar there are for the first time influences of the Renaissance in Swabian painting and signs of a change of epochs in the performing arts in Swabia.

The work of the unnamed sure renowned artist was sawed apart in recent times and in 1841 on the occasion of its 25th Kronjubiläums as a gift to the King of Württemberg, I. Wilhelm given. The altar fragments then ended up in the State Gallery in Stuttgart . A true-to-original photographic copy of the work can be found in the church today.

The Nürtinger Altar is possibly a work by Conrad Weiß , an assumption based on the initial CW found on the altar. Weiß was born in Rottweil , was a painter in Augsburg and was influenced by Hans Holbein .
