A group of Flemish painters who are not known by name and who probably ran a joint workshop in Antwerp around 1520 or 1530 are referred to as masters with the parrot or parrot masters .

classification

The emergency name was first given to the painter of several panels of Mary with the boy Jesus, on which the child is feeding a parrot . Further works were then assigned to this master in art history. More recent research now suspects that it is not a question of a single individual painter, but rather a workshop with several artists who worked on common themes for the market of devotional images for the bourgeoisie, which was emerging at their time.

The style and working method of the masters with the parrot are reminiscent of works by the master of the female half-length figures or other Flemish painters such as Ambrosius Benson . Jean Bellegambe was named as one of the possible artists in 1911 . In some cases, Max J. Friedländer ascribed portraits of women as half-length figures to him.
