Master of the Peringsdörfer Altarpiece

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A late Gothic painter from Nuremberg, whose name is not known for certain, is referred to as the master of the Peringsdörfer altar . He received his emergency name after the pictures he created around 1485 to 1488 for the Nuremberg Augustinian Hermit Church for a Passion altar. This wall altar is named after its donors Sebald Peringsdörfer (d. 1498) and his wife.

Work by or from the school of Michael Wolgemut

The master of the Peringsdörfer altar comes at least from the school of Michael Wolgemut , the pictures of the Peringsdörfer altar are also seen as the work of Wolgemut himself. The style shows an influence of contemporary Dutch painting and the emergence of a new painting direction in Nuremberg.

History of the altar

Originally donated for a chapel in the Augustinian Church in Sebald's old town, consecrated in 1486, the Peringsdörfer Altar was moved to the Church of the Holy Cross after the monastery was dissolved in 1564. After its destruction in World War II, the altar was placed in the Friedenskirche (Nuremberg) .
