Master of the Wolfgang Altar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a master of Wolfgang altar or master of Wolfgang Altar is medieval painter referred to the 1450-1460 painted on a gold background altar of St. Wolfgang in the Sankt Lorenzkirche in Nuremberg . The epitaph altar for Peter Zenner, painted around 1460 for the Dominican Church in Nuremberg, is attributed to the master , one of the earliest known examples of an epitaph altar, today in the Trinity Church in Nuremberg.

He was still committed to the traditional way of painting that went back to Bohemian roots, as prevailed in Nuremberg in the middle of the 15th century, when a new painting direction arose under the influence of contemporary Dutch painting, for example by the master of the cloth altar .

The master probably ran a larger workshop and some other works are ascribed to him or his environment. For example, the master is said to have painted the Nuremberg Holy Spirit retable from around 1449, part of the Twelve Messenger Altar from the Heilig-Geist-Spital in Nuremberg, formerly in the Nuremberg Lorenz Church and today in the art museum of the Archdiocese of Cologne .
