Master of Chaource: Entombment , Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church in Chaource , 1515–1520.

The late medieval sculptor who created a burial of Christ for the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church in Chaource in France around 1515 is referred to by the emergency name Meister von Chaource . With the burial in Villeneuve-l'Archevêque in 1528, the work in Chaource, an almost life-size group of figures, is one of the most important examples of the style of the sculptures made between 1480 and 1540 in the art workshops around Troyes and Champagne .

Master of St. Martha

The concise and realistic style of the master by Chaource is seen in art history as the basis for further attributions. So is the figure of a St. Martha in the church of Sainte Madeleine in Troyes also from the hand of the master. That is why he is sometimes called the Master of St. Martha listed.

identification

It was investigated whether the master of Chaource could be Jacques Bachot, who was proven in Champagne ; however, this is controversial.
