The Master of Lourinhã ( Port. Mestre da Lourinhã) is an unknown Portuguese painter at the beginning of the 16th century.

Naming

The master of Lourinhã got his emergency name after his pictures, which can be found today in the Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Lourinhã near Lisbon.

Style and meaning

At the beginning of the 16th century, Portugal experienced an economic and cultural boom under King Manuel I , sometimes referred to as the golden Manueline age . The paintings of the Master of Lourinhã are considered to be among the best examples of painting in Portugal during the early Renaissance period. They are a significant example of Portuguese painting influenced by the Flemish painting of their time.

The master of Lourinhã belongs to the so-called Luso-Flemish school of painting. This grouping includes Flemish painters from the 15th and 16th centuries who worked in the history of art in Portugal, including the Hieronymite monk Frei Carlos, who worked near Lisbon near Évora , as well as those of the aesthetic and technical innovations of Flemish painting of their time inspired Portuguese painters such as Francisco Henriques and their successors.
