Master of Urphar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The fresco painter who painted three churches in the area around Urphar , a village east of Wertheim , is called the master of Urphar or Urphar master . He probably worked first in the parish church in Oberschüpf , then in today's St. Laurentius cemetery chapel in Freudenberg and finally in the Jakobuskirche in Urphar.

The late Romanesque frescoes of the master in these churches were rediscovered between 1909 and 1953 and with their depictions of biblical scenes from the creation of the world to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus give an insight into the beliefs of their time. You are at the transition to the Gothic . In a typical depiction that is still reminiscent of the Byzantine imagery, the enthroned Christ is shown as the judge of the world. Images of saints such as St. Michael weighing souls at the Last Judgment expand the representations, as do saints such as Christophorus and James the Elder . James with a pilgrim's shell and a pilgrim's staff reminds us that Urphar and its ford across the Main were on the region's Way of St. James and in the 13th century it was an important stop on its east-west connection from Bohemia. The frescoes of the master were probably also intended as a spiritual view for the pilgrims to Jacob, and Urphar was consecrated in 1297 to the patronage of the apostle.
