The mottled snail fly ( Coremacera marginata ) is a fly from the horned fly family (Sciomyzidae).
features
The dark brown colored flies reach a length of 7-10 mm. The distinctive red-brown compound eyes have light horizontal stripes. The head tapers towards the front. In addition to the eyes, the wings serve as a distinguishing feature of the fly species. These are dark brown in color and covered with numerous white spots. Their often dark antennae have an orange ring at the base.
distribution and habitat
The species is represented in large parts of Europe as well as in the Middle East. Forest edges, clearings and meadows form the typical habitat.
Way of life
The flight time of the mottled snail flies lasts from June to October. The adults suck nectar from various flowering plants. The females lay their eggs on snail shells or directly on slugs. After hatching, the maggots develop parasitically in the corresponding snails. When bred, mottled snail flies gain a certain importance in the biological control of snail pests .
