Melissa Reiser

Melissa Reiser is an American saxophonist, music ethnologist and music teacher.

Career

Reiser studied saxophone at the Eastman School of Music (Bachelor) and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Région de Boulogne-Billancourt (diploma) and ethnomusicology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Master and PhD). She taught saxophone and world music first at Luther College , then at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Whitewater. She conducted field research on the music of the Tuareg in the Sahara region of Mali.

As a saxophonist, Reiser is a member of the Madison-based klezmer group Yid Vicious (with Matt Appleby , Geoffrey Brady , Kia Karlen , Greg Smith , David Spies and Daithi Wolfe ), with whom she recorded four CDs, the afropop band Kweku Ananse , the big band Ladies Must Swing and the Group for New Music Present Music . She has also performed with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra . She has performed internationally at festivals in France, China, Korea and Japan.
