history

The opening of the first pharmacy in Oerlinghausen took place on January 1st, 1831. The pharmacist Friedrich Ernst Melm came from Bremen, where his family had been running a pharmacy since 1703. As he was known as a reliable and hardworking man, he was awarded the title of postal expedition by Thurn und Taxis in 1840 . He now also had to take care of the entire Oerlinghauser postal service. For this purpose he had an extension built in 1857 and hired additional staff. The entire right wing of his house was used for the postal service, which was handled here until 1865. The post intended for the surrounding rural communities was handed out in the pharmacy or the pharmacy servant called the addressees from the high stairs in front of the pharmacy on Sundays after the church visit. If the recipient was not there, neighbors took the letter with them. In spite of this, incoming mail often stayed in the shop window for days until the addressee answered. The first postage stamps appeared on January 1, 1852 and were canceled with a square postmark and the number 326.

The entrance to the Melmschen Hirsch pharmacy was reached via a nine-step external staircase. It was named after the parent company, the Hirsch Pharmacy in Bremen . In 1931 Carl Wachsmuth received permission to use the name Wachsmuth-Melm. At the end of the 1950s, the house was rebuilt and the stairs disappeared in favor of a single-storey entrance. The pharmacy was moved to the ground floor. In 1983 the pharmacy received a sandstone portal and thus its present face. In 1990 Henner Wachsmuth-Melm took over the management of the pharmacy from his father Carl Ludwig.
