Melocactus conoideus is a species of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species is derived from the Greek noun "κώνος" (konos) for cone and means cone-like .

Melocactus conoideus grows with strongly depressed spherical to hemispherical bodies that reach heights of growth of up to 10 centimeters and diameters of up to 17 centimeters. There are 11 to 14 very low and rounded ribs . Some of the dark brown and gray-tinged thorns are still bent or hooked on seedlings. The single central spine is 2 to 2.2 inches long. The 8 to 11 radial spines are straight to slightly curved and up to 3.5 inches long. The cephalium , made up of abundant white wool and dark red bristles , is up to 4 centimeters high and has a diameter of 7.5 centimeters.
The purple flowers are up to 2.2 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 1 centimeter. The inverted club-shaped fruits are more or less pink magenta and reach a length of 1.8 centimeters. The pulp is white.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Melocactus conoideus is widespread in the southeast of the Brazilian state of Bahia . It was first described in 1974 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining and Arnold J. Brederoo .
Melocactus conoideus is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is it as " Critically Endangered (CR) , d". H. classified critically endangered.
