Melocactus estevesii is a species of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet estevesii honors the Brazilian cactus lover and plant collector Eddie Esteves Pereira .

description

Melocactus estevesii grows with green cylindrical shoots that reach heights of up to 22 centimeters with a diameter of 10 to 17 centimeters. There are twelve to sixteen rather high and narrow ribs , the edges of which are rounded. The rotating, usually curved, initially cloudy red thorns turn black later. The mostly single central spine, sometimes up to four, is 4 to 6 centimeters long. Of the eight to nine radial spines that are up to 86 centimeters long, the lowest is the longest. The cephalium , which consists of reddish bristles and white wool, grows up to 13 centimeters high and reaches a diameter of 6 centimeters.

The pink flowers are up to 3.7 centimeters long and 1.5 to 1.8 centimeters in diameter. They open in the afternoon and protrude up to 1.2 centimeters from the cephalium. The elongated club-shaped red fruits are 3 to 4 centimeters long. There are no seeds in the lower half of the fruit .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Melocactus estevesii is common in the Brazilian state of Roraima .

It was first described in 1989 by Pierre Josef Braun .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
