Melocactus harlowii is a species of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet harlowii honors the US naval officer and commander of the Guantánamo Naval Station Charles Henry Harlow.

Melocactus harlowii grows with light green, egg-shaped to cylindrical shoots that reach heights of up to 25 centimeters with a diameter of 10 to 20 centimeters. There are ten to twelve ribs . The 3 to 4 centimeter long spines cannot be divided into central and radial spines. They are slender, slightly spread out, initially reddish and finally yellowish with age. The cephalium , which consists of reddish bristles , becomes 5 to 10 centimeters high and reaches the same diameter.
The red flowers are 1.5 to 2 centimeters long and 1 to 2 centimeters in diameter. They barely protrude from the cephalium. The elongated pink-colored fruits are up to 2 centimeters long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Melocactus harlowii is common in the southeast of Cuba .
It was first described as Cactus harlowii in 1912 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel placed the species in the genus Melocactus in the same year .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
