The Melocactus matanzanus is a species of plant in the genus Melocactus from the cactus family (Cactaceae). The epithet of the species is derived from its place of discovery, the Cuban city of Matanzas .

description

Melocactus matanzanus grows spherically and reaches heights of 7 to 9 centimeters with diameters between 8 and 9 centimeters. There are 8 to 9 (or more) ribs on the light green plant body . Brownish white or gray thorns arise from the areoles . The central spine is up to 2 inches long, the 7 to 8 spreading radial spines are between 1.2 and 2 inches long. The cephalium , densely covered with reddish-brown bristles, reaches a height of up to 9 centimeters and a diameter of 5 to 6 centimeters.

The pink flowers that open around noon are up to 2 centimeters long. The 1 to 2 centimeter long fruits are pink to lilac pink.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Melocactus matanzanus is common in northern Cuba .

The first description was published in 1834 by Hermano León . Synonyms are Cactus matanzanus (León) Borg (1951) and Melocactus actinacanthus Areces (1976).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
