Melocactus oreas is a species of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet oreas means 'mountain dwellers'.
description
Melocactus oreas grows with medium to dark green, depressed spherical to elongated shoots , which reach heights of 8.5 to 35 centimeters with diameters of 10 to 18 centimeters. There are ten to 16 rounded, sharp-edged ribs . The round thorns are yellowish brown to reddish brown. The one to four central spines are 2.7 to 4.5 inches long. The four to eight centimeters long eight to eleven radial spines are straight or curved. The cephalium , which consists of dark reddish brown bristles , is up to 12 centimeters high and has a diameter of 4 to 8 centimeters.
The slightly light to dark pink-amber-colored flowers are 1.7 to 2.2 centimeters long and 0.7 to 1 centimeter in diameter. The elongated club-shaped, red at their tip and magenta to slightly pink below, fruits are 1.4 to 2.8 inches long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Melocactus oreas is common in the Brazilian state of Bahia .
It was first described in 1840 by Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel . It becomes the two subspecies
- Melocactus oreas subsp. oreas
- Melocactus oreas subsp. cremnophilus (Buining & Brederoo) PJBraun
distinguished.
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
