Meltwater was founded with the vision of filtering online news in order to extract relevant information and insights. With this business idea, Meltwater quickly developed into the world market leader in media monitoring . The company's first product was a news clip service that scanned 100,000 news sources to identify relevant search terms for business customers. Meltwater has continued to evolve since then. Social media monitoring was integrated into the existing solution right from the start of social networks. This created the Meltwater Media Intelligence platform. Because companies and consumers leave a lot of traces on the Internet every day - this creates big data , a large amount of data. Meltwater invests in Artificial Intelligence to analyze this data, identify trends and generate relevant insights.

  • After acquiring the social media monitoring company BuzzGain in 2010 and the CRM software developer JitterJam in February 2011, Meltwater released the social marketing and business intelligence tool Buzz Engage in June 2011. In August of the same year, Meltwater acquired the real-time search engine IceRocket whose functions were integrated into the Buzz Engage platform, which was subsequently called Meltwater Buzz.
  • In 2015, the launch of a new media intelligence platform called "Meltwater" followed, which served as a unifying solution to improve work in marketing and business in general. Litigation

Meltwater brought a lawsuit against the UK Newspaper Licensing Agency (NLA) before the UK Copyright Tribunal. This has extended its license model, which was originally limited to the print sector, to online media, which Meltwater regards as unjustified. A decision was expected in February 2011.

In mid-March 2010, the Copyright Tribunal decided in an interim decision in favor of Meltwater and imposed the costs of the proceedings on the NLA. The London Times Online - for its part not part of the NLA license - has independently started to block the access of Meltwater's web crawlers to its site.
