Melvin Seals

Melvin Seals (* 1953 in San Francisco , California ) is an American musician who is best known as the organist in the Jerry Garcia Band .

Life

Melvin Seals began playing piano in 1970. Early in his career he played the organ in his local church until he eventually worked with personalities like Charlie Daniels , Elvin Bishop and Chuck Berry .

Projects

In late 1980 he joined the Jerry Garcia Band . He played alongside Jerry García (guitar, vocals), John Kahn (bass), Jimmy Warren (keyboard, clavinet) and Daoud Shaw (drums) on the organ. Melvin accompanied the band, which appeared in various line-ups, until they broke up after Jerry Garcia's death in 1995. The last line-up of the band consisted of Jerry Garcia (guitar, vocals), John Kahn (bass), Melvin Seals (organ), David Kemper (drums), Jaclyn LaBranch (vocals) and Gloria Jones (vocals).

Shortly after Jerry Garcia's death, Melvin Seals decided to continue Jerry Garcia's legacy and formed the JGB Band in 1995, which currently consists of Melvin Seals, Lady Chi, Mary-eL, Pete Lavezzoli, John Kadlecik and John-Paul McLean (as of : May 2020).
