The Jerry Garcia Band was a band from the Grateful Dead leader Jerry Garcia . This band was Garcia's biggest and longest side project.

history

The band existed from their first appearance in 1975 until his death in 1995. In 1996 the band was continued under the name JGB in his memory, but with a different line-up and sometimes a different style. In addition to the Jerry Garcia Band, there was the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band , which differs in that it was purely acoustic and the Jerry Garcia Band purely electric.

The band was formed during a break from the Grateful Dead with musicians who already played with him at Legion of Mary . Next to Garcia, John Kahn was the only constant member for over 20 years. After that, Melvin Seals ( keyboard and electronic organ ), the later founder of JGB , was the longest member. He joined the band in 1980 and stayed until it was dissolved. Kahn died in 1996 before JGB was founded, so Seals became the new leader.

The band's stylistic spectrum was broad. The main direction was rock music , which was influenced by country , blues , folk and jazz (see Roots Rock ). But Garcia was also inspired by rhythm and blues and reggae . Seals brings a lot of gospel organ to the style. As with the Deads, musical improvisation was an integral part of the performances. It was also noticeable that Garcia covered many of Bob Dylan's songs .

In 1978 the first studio album "Cats Under the Stars" was released, the next album "Jerry Garcia Band" was not released until 1991, the live album of the same name was recorded in 1990 during a performance at The Warfield music theater . Ten other live albums were only released posthumously after Garcia's and Kahn's deaths.

Several Grateful Dead members were part of the formation, which changed constantly. The Jerry Garcia Band not only toured during breaks from the Grateful Dead, but often also in parallel, so that there were also joint appearances.
