Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band (JGAB) was a short-lived side project of the Grateful Dead leader Jerry García .
The JGAB was closely related to the Jerry Garcia Band . With both bands Garcia preferred rock music with influences from country , blues , folk and jazz (see Roots Rock ). However, while the JGB played with electric instruments, the JGAB played acoustic versions .
Garcia, Nelson and Rothman had known each other since the early 1960s when they played together in the bluegrass band The Black Mountain Boys . John Kahn was also an acquaintance of Garcia. The band had their first appearance under this name on May 17, 1987 at a benefit concert in the music theater The Fillmore . The band then performed other gigs, sometimes together with the Jerry Garcia Band , so that they always alternated between acoustic and electrical sets.
The band was booked, among other things, for two weeks at the Broadway theater Lunt-Fontanne , further appearances were in the music theater The Warfield in San Francisco , in the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles and in the Frost Amphitheater at Stanford University .
During the time of its existence, the band released the live album "Almost Acoustic" in 1988. In 2004 two more albums came out of archive material.
