Membranelle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An organelle in eyelash animals is called a membranelle . There are numerous, seemingly interconnected eyelashes that form a standing triangle, but are arranged at the base as a rectangle of usually 3 or 5, occasionally 2 or 4 dense rows of kinetosomes . The kinetosomes are linked by fibrils . They usually serve as a functional unit for spinning food, rarely for locomotion.

Presumably the organelles identified by this term are not homologous .

Eyelash animals from the Spirotrichea group have what is known as an adoral membrane zone (AZM), which is composed of several rows of membranes and extends into the buccal cavity . Eyelash animals from the group of hymenostomatia, on the other hand, have the membranell on the left side of the buccal cavity, while on the right side an undulating membrane .
