Memphis, Tennessee is a song by Chuck Berry from 1959. As sung by Johnny Rivers , it reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States in 1964 .

The English text is about a young man who tries to find a girl's phone number while switching the call. In the course of the conversation it turns out that the girl is the six-year-old daughter of the singer, from whom he is separated from his wife after the divorce.

The song has been covered many times by Elvis Presley , The Animals , Paul Anka , Count Basie , The Beatles , The Dave Clark Five , Bo Diddley , Jerry Lee Lewis , Roy Orbison , Lonnie Mack and many others. The German version with the text written by Lilibert comes from Bernd Spier , was a number one hit in Germany and stayed in the charts for seven weeks.
