Mendeley is a literature management program for organizing, exchanging and citing scientific articles and PDF documents. The software is supplemented by a web interface. You can use a browser to manage your own library and access statistics that show current trends in research. You can also create a personal profile and exchange ideas with other researchers on a social network .

function

The metadata and source information in scientific PDF documents are automatically imported into your own library. Using a “bookmarklet” it is possible to import bibliographic information from numerous online library catalogs into your own library (e.g. Google Scholar or PubMed ). The open COinS standard is also supported. Text can be marked in the integrated PDF viewer and notes can be attached. Plugins for Microsoft Word and LibreOffice (formerly also Open Office ) enable the citation of scientific documents and the automatic creation of bibliographies in your own documents. A variety of citation styles are supported. In addition, bibliographical information can be released for other users who e.g. B. via RSS - web feed can be subscribed.

Mendeley's goal is to become a kind of “ Last.fm for science”. In the future, scientists should receive recommendations for interesting and relevant articles based on their library and their main research areas. Mendeley was named "European Start-Up of the Year" 2009 by Plugg.eu.

history

The original investors included Stefan Glänzer, former Executive Chairman and founding investor of Last.fm, who now held the same role at Mendeley, the former founding developer of Skype , Alejandro Zubillaga, formerly Head of Digital Strategy at Warner Music Group, and academics from the University of Cambridge and Johns Hopkins University .

In April 2013, Mendeley was bought by the Elsevier publishing group for a price ranging between $ 69 million and $ 100 million.
