Menelaus (Agiade)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Menelaus ( Greek Μενέλαος Menelaus ) is in Greek mythology , the seventh king of Sparta from the House of Agiaden . His successor was Archelaus .

Menelaus only appears in Excerpta Latina Barbari , where 44 years of reign are assigned to him. There he is called Cemenelaus . This is regarded as a translation error , as the translator, whose name was unknown, had little knowledge of Greek . The original Greek text for καὶ Μενέλαος (and Menelaus) is being reconstructed.

Since the king does not appear in either Herodotus or Pausanias , his existence is often doubted.
