architecture

The size of the Longshan Temple is approximately 1,600 square meters and is oriented in a north-south direction. Its floor plan is based on the Chinese character , and the main hall of the temple is located in the center of the square inner courtyard. This is the typical palace shape of traditional Chinese architecture , which is based on a clear central axis of Pailou , the vestibule, the main hall and the rear hall. The main deity of the temple is Kuan Yin .

history

During the Qing Dynasty , many Han Chinese immigrated to Taiwan from Fujian and Guangdong . Because of the dangerous route and the passage of the ship across the Taiwan Straits , they took their folk religion with them to Taiwan as a protection and built temples there based on local models. Longshan Temple is a good example of this. It was built in 1738 by immigrants from the Chinese prefecture of Quanzhou . These immigrants are also known as the "three-yi immigrants" because they came from the three districts (Chinese: yì 邑) Jun-Jan, Nan-An and Hue-An in Quanzhou Prefecture.

Repairs were made after an earthquake in 1815 and a typhoon in 1867. In 1919, a Buddhist monk gave all his savings to repair a termite damage so that the temple could be restored. So the temple has been preserved to this day. In 1945, its main hall was destroyed, but the statue of Kuan Yin was not damaged.

In the Sino-French War of 1884, an army of volunteers was raised against France. At the time, the official government of Taiwan Province was in Hsinchu , not Taipei , with Longshan Temple serving as the official residence in Taipei. The volunteers signed the Longshan Temple name seal and registered with the office to do military service. Therefore, the Qing Emperor presented the temple with a plaque with the inscription "Eternal Shining Mother" in recognition of the main deity of the temple, Kuan Yin.
