Menhir de la Vacherie
The menhir de la Vacherie (also called Gargantua Galle , Molaire de Gargantua or Menhir de la Galoche ) is a menhir in Carlet, southeast of Donges in the Loire-Atlantique department in France .
Originally, the menhir standing in a meadow of the farm La Vacherie , near the estuary of the Loire . It has stood on the industrial site since the construction of the oil refinery (Raffinerie de Donges) and, like the neighboring Dolmen La Roche, is inaccessible to the public.
It became a Christianized megalithic monument , which was crowned by an iron cross and also served as a sea mark . In 1770 the menhir was struck by lightning and part of the stone and the cross were destroyed.
The 4.75 m high menhir was classified as a Monument historique in 1889 .
