Menhir of Aspradantes
The Aspradantes menhir (also called Menir de Padrão or Padrão I) is a phallic menhir made of white limestone near the hamlet Ingrina southeast of Vila do Bispo in the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina near Lagos in the Algarve in Portugal .
The listed menhir is about 2.2 m high and about 90 cm in circumference. It is decorated on the upper edge with a circumferential row of semi-ellipses. Some archaeologists call this cord the “phallic waist” ( Portuguese cintura fálica ).
The 259 menhirs of the Algarve are mainly characterized by their morphology, decoration and the archaeological context. They are concentrated in the far west of the province, which instead has few megalithic structures. The menhirs are usually cylindrical or sub-conical in shape. Their mostly geometric decoration is uniform. They consist of limestone and sandstone , the sedimentary rock of the geological subsurface. The question of the function and timing of the menhirs remains unresolved.
