Menhir from Crehelp

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The menhir of Crehelp (also Prince Aralt's Grave - ( German  "Prinz Haralds Grab" - called)) is a menhir ( English Standing Stone ) and stands in the townland of Crehelp ( Irish Craobh Eilpe ) between Hollywood and Donard, near the border with County Kildare in County Wicklow in Ireland .

According to the Annals of the Four Masters , the Annals of Ulster and the Annals of Inisfallen , the Battle of Glenmama (also Gleann Mama ) took place near Lyons Hill in Ardclough in County Kildare in 999 AD . In the battle, the forces of Leinster under King Máel Mórda mac Murchada and his Danish ally Sigtrygg Silkbeard , King of Dublin, suffered a crushing defeat against the forces of the kingdoms of Meath and Munster led by Brian Boru .

The granite column is said to mark the tomb of Prince Aralt ( Haraldr Óláfsson ), an under -king of the Vikings who was killed in battle. The approximately 1.8 m high fenced column, with a square cross-section of 0.26 to 0.27 m, has a rectangular hole 0.11 m wide and 0.23 m high about half a meter from above. The stone probably comes from an earlier cemetery or from a cillin .
