Annals of Inis Traps

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Annals of Inisfallen ( Irish Annála Inis Faithleann , English Annals of Inisfallen ) are the oldest surviving medieval chronicle of Ireland . They are written in Irish and Latin and consist of an undated section that describes the time before Patrick and a second section with dates that covers the period from 433 to 1450.

It is assumed that most of the entries from before the 10th century were copied from the now no longer preserved annals of Clonmacnoise in Emly Abbey at the end of the 10th century, with cuts and distortions in each case. The chronicle was then continued in Toomgraney , copied in Killaloe in the middle of the 11th century and transferred to Lismore around 1119 , where it was continued. At the beginning of the 12th century, the chronicle was kept in Inisfallen Monastery on the island of the same name near Killarney .

The only manuscript preserved today is in the Bodleian Library at Oxford University . It is assumed that it originated in Inisfallen during the 12th to 15th centuries. The entries for the years 1131–1158, 1215 and 1286–1294 are missing.
