Mephisto was a German speed metal band from the Ruhr area. It was founded in 1986 and emerged from the band "Roy Bean".

Band history

When the band "Roy Bean" (then known as the support act of Destruction , Slayer and Van Straaten), which had been founded in the late 1970s, broke up in the mid-1980s, the original members Uwe Suerick and Wolfgang Mann decided to found a new band. With the guitarists Andrès Hladik, Andreas Rippelmeier and the bassist Marc Schulz the new band members were found in early 1986 and the band name was changed to "Mephisto". The guitarist Andrès Hladik had the idea of naming it "Mephisto". A 6-track demo production followed in 1987, which received very good reviews in the specialist press. Due to this positive response, the record label "Miracle Records" was interested in "Mephisto" in 1988, whereupon the band's first record deal came about and they went to the Franz K. Studios for recording purposes in July 1988 to record the debut album. During the recording of their debut album, the band got the news that ex- Warlock guitarist Peter Szigeti was about to found a new band and that he wanted to name his new band "Mephisto". For this purpose, the bassist Marc Schulz met with Peter Szigeti in Düsseldorf for a clarifying discussion, whereupon the ex-Warlock guitarist abandoned his plan to use the same name.

Mephisto Live in "Spectrum" Castrop-Rauxel (1993)

Although the debut album received consistently good reviews and points were also very good at live concerts (the concert in the Rockfabrik Ludwigsburg on June 26, 1988 is worth mentioning ), personal differences arose within the band in mid-1989. Then Andreas Rippelmeier and Marc Schulz left the band. After a short period of rest due to the search for new band members and the orientation towards the musical continuation of the band, the new band members were found in the fall of 1989 with guitarist Markus Brüker and bassist Dirk Welke. Numerous new songs were created and they went back to the studio to record another demo. After the release of the new demo and numerous concerts in the Ruhr area, there was a record deal with Rockport Records in Offenbach in December 1990 (label name "Energy"). The long player No. 2 was recorded in the spring / summer of 1991 at Rockport Studios and released in autumn 1991 under the title "Mephisto - In Search of Lost Refuge" via "SPV". The second Mephisto album, like the debut album, received consistently good reviews. However, due to a lack of sales strength, it was not able to establish itself as well as had been hoped. The advertising wheel was turned all the more with concerts and "Mephisto" grew into a very popular live act in the next few years. In the following period, between 1991 and 1993, numerous new songs were written and demo recordings were made on their own. However, there was no further record deal because the band finally broke up towards the end of 1993.

The debut album from 1988 was re-released on CD in January 2018 for the 30th anniversary with additional demo tracks.
